Luminar Neo Supersharp AI Review – Convenient, But not the Best

In this Luminar Neo SuperSharp AI review, we’re looking at Skylum Software‘s AI-Powered photo sharpening tool. And like other AI sharpening tools, SuperSharp AI promises artifact-free sharpening and the ability to correct poor focus and motion blur.

However, this first iteration of Luminar SuperSharp AI falls short of mature, well-greased alternatives such as Topaz Sharpen AI. But unlike any other AI Sharpening tool, SuperSharp AI is fully integrated with Luminar Neo enabling you to contain your photo editing and sharpening within a single application. So, is that enough to earn SuperSharp AI, my recommendation? Let’s take a look. Jump to Conclusion

Luminar Neo SuperSharp AI is for sharpening your photos. But unlike traditional sharpening tools, SuperSharp AI will not litter your sharpened image with strange artifacts and halo-like outlines.

Furthermore, you can use SuperSharp AI to correct poor focus and motion blur, something traditional sharpening cannot do.

SuperSharp AI Tutorial

SuperSharp AI is straightforward to use. Open your image and select the Edit tab. You will find SuperSharpAI listed amongst the tools on the right-hand side of the screen.

Using SuperSharp AI

You will be presented with three options – Low, Middle, and High. Try each and settle on whichever gives you the best result.

SuperSharp AI Test

The following three 1:1 crops were all sharpened with SuperSelect AI. Move the slider left-to-right to compare the sharpened image with the original. In this part of this SuperSharp AI review, we’ll find out how good SuperSharp AI is.

SuperSharp AI test 1

A kea

Set to Low, SuperSharp AI does a good job of sharpening this photo of a Kea. Medium and High settings resulted in a corrupted, overly processed look.

SuperSharp AI Test 2

Correcting Motion Blur with SuperSharp AI

In this example and set to Low, SuperSharp AI could correct the subject’s motion blur to a reasonable degree. As before, medium and high settings played havoc with the image quality and were effectively unusable.

SuperSharp AI Test 3

Correcting poor focus with SuperSharp AI

SuperSharp AI does a good job of correcting the blur while maintaining a natural look. Once again, I could only get an acceptable result with the low setting.

SuperSharp AI Performance

In terms of speed, SuperSharp AI took, on average, between 10 and 25 seconds to sharpen an image. The rendering process would repeat if you made an adjustment, such as switching from Low to Middle sharpening.

With only three settings, SuperSharp AI is straightforward to use. However, I often found that the Low was the only usable setting with Medium and High overstressing the image.

Supersharp AI Compared

SuperSharp AI vs Topaz Sharpen AI

I consider Topaz Sharpen AI and Topaz Photo AI the best in the business; that has not changed. Topaz Sharpen AI is superior to SuperSharp AI in terms of usability, flexibility, speed, and results.

Read Topaz Sharpen AI Review

Of course, you can use SuperSharp AI within Luminar Neo, whereas Topaz Sharpen AI demands an extra step. But if you crave results over convenience, Topaz Sharpen AI is more capable. Read Topaz Sharpen AI Review for more information.

SuperSharp AI vs ON1 TackSharp AI

Tack Sharp AI is packaged with the wonderful ON1 NoNoise 2023, and like SuperSharp AI, TackSharp AI is in its first iteration and a little rough around the edges.

Read ON1 NoNoise 2023 Review

In terms of results, both yield decent results so long as you show restraint with the settings. However, TackSharp AI offers more adjustment and, thus, creative freedom. Furthermore, Tack Sharp AI is the fastest AI sharpening tool I’ve ever used. Read ON1 NoNoise 2023 Review.

Conclusion – Is SuperSharp AI any Good?

SuperSharp AI is in its first iteration, and it shows. While it’s possible to get reasonable results, anything North of its lowest setting tends to result in an ugly, over-processed photo.

While most AI-powered Sharpening tools are slow, SuperSharp AI is slower than most taking anywhere between 10 and 25 seconds to sharpen an image.

So while SuperSharp AI is a superior alternative to traditional image sharpening, it falls short of best-in-class alternatives such as Topaz Sharpen AI.

But unlike Topaz Sharpen AI or any other AI sharpening application, SuperSharp AI is integrated with Luminar Neo enabling you to contain your photo editing workflow within a single application. For this reason, you may prefer to trade the outright performance of Topaz Sharpen AI for the downright convenience of SuperSharp AI.

In conclusion, SuperSharp AI is a decent first effort that falls short of its mature competition. Thus, viewed in isolation, it’s difficult for me to recommend SuperSharp AI. But when considering SuperSharp AI as another brick in the Luminar Neo wall, the convenience of having an inbuilt AI sharpener is tangible and, possibly, worth more to you than the absolute best result.
