DxO PureRAW Review – PureRaw 3 Tested and Compared

DxO PureRaw 3 Review

DxO PureRaw 3 combines best-in-class raw conversion, top-tier noise reduction, and a fully automated workflow, resulting in one of the best image enhancement applications I have ever tested.

However, DxO PureRaw 3 does have some limitations. For instance, it’s Raw only, so no JPEGS. Furthermore, it’s comparably expensive and not much better than DxO PureRaw 2. However, these issues aside, DxO PureRaw 3 is at the top of its game. Jump to Conclusion.

What is DxO PureRAW 3

DxO Pure RAW 3 is a specialist raw conversion and noise reduction application for PC and Mac OS and can be used standalone or as a Lightroom plugin. Read Lightroom Review.

DxO PureRAW 3 Before and After

However, you should not confuse DxO PureRaw 3 for a photo editing application. For instance, you cannot use DxO PureRaw to crop your image, adjust white balance, or boost exposure. Instead, as the sample below demonstrates, DxO Pure Raw 3 exists to prepare, correct, and polish your raw file before further editing.

DxO PureRaw 3 Video Review

What does DxO PureRaw 3 do?

DxO PureRaw corrects and enhances your Raw files. Specifically, DxO PureRaw corrects Lens Softness and distortion, removes Vignetting and Chromatic Aberrations, and finally, denoises your image. While these fixes and features are commonplace, what makes DxO PureRaw 3 so unique is its application of bespoke Optics Modules.

DxO Optics Modules

DxO PureRaw 3 applies its corrections using Optic Modules built around specific camera and lens combinations. For instance, if you take a photo with an OM-1 paired with an Olympus 17mm F1.8 – DxO PureRaw’s corrections will be optimized to address image quality deficiencies unique to that camera-lens pairing.

DxO PureRaw will examine your images and download a single Optics Module for each unique Camera and Lens combination. Each download is a one-off and takes just a few seconds.

Thanks to the insight provided by bespoke Optics Modules, DxO PureRaw reliably produces excellent results almost every time. Moreover, adding new Optical Modules is entirely automatic, with DxO PureRaw downloading new modules each time you present it with an image taken with a unique camera/lens combination. As you might hope, the download is quick and one-off.

As stated earlier in this DxO PureRaw review, PureRaw 3 is Raw only. Therefore, these adjustments cannot be applied to JPEG, TIFF, and other non-Raw files.

Noise Reduction

DxO PureRaw 3 is one of the best noise reduction software applications I’ve tested. This is to say that noise reduction in PureRaw 3 is at least as good as that of Topaz Photo AI, ON1 NoNoise AI, and Topaz Denoise AI.

DXO PureRaw 3

As you will see in the sample below, DxO PureRaw 3’s noise reduction and image correction work together to produce truly transformative results. Note the size discrepancy between the before and after images is due to distortion correction.

Furthermore, DxO PureRaw 3 offers two distinct noise reduction models in DeepPRIME and DeepPRIME XD. DeepPRIME XD is new to DxO PureRaw 3 and offers a subtle improvement over DeepPRIME at the cost of slower processing times.

DeepPRIME XD

However, there are some factors you should consider besides image quality. First, DxO PureRaw 3 doesn’t even open JPEG or TIFF files, let alone denoise them.

Secondly, DxO PureRaw 3 is highly automated (more on this next) and reliably produces excellent results without demanding your attention. For this reason, I consider DxO PureRaw 3 the best application for enhancing and denoising large batches of Raw files. Test DxO PureRaw 3 Noise Reduction on your own photos – for free.

Automated Workflow

DxO PureRaw 3 differs from other image enhancement and denoising applications in that it does everything for you. In other words, you won’t be bouncing between images turning knobs and dragging sliders.

Instead, you’ll set a few parameters, such as which corrections (vignetting removal, distortion correction, etc.) you would like to apply and whether you prefer DeepPRIME or DeepPRIME XD noise reduction. Finally, you’ll specify whether you want your processed images saved as a JPEG, TIFF, or DNG Raw file and which folder you want it saved in. That’s it.

DxO PureRaw 3 is largely automated, but you can choose which corrections you wish to apply and your preferred method of Noise Reduction. You can export your enhanced image(s) to JPEG, TIFF, or DNG Raw – the latter being the best option for further editing.

Once you press Start Processing, your image(s) will be processed in the background, giving you more time to do vastly more interesting things.

Usually, I’m not fond of such a hands-off approach, but DxO PureRaw 3 is so uniquely reliable it can be trusted to do an excellent job despite your absence. Try DxO PureRaw 3 Batch Processing now.

How to use DxO PureRaw 3

DxO PureRaw 3 is very straightforward to use. Nevertheless, the tutorial below will give you a running start.

How to use DxO PureRaw 3

DxO PureRaw 3 Compared

When you factor in PureRaw’s automated workflow, bespoke image corrections, and elite-level noise reduction – DxO PureRaw 3 offers a unique combination of familiar features.

For instance, if you only want noise reduction, you can buy equally effective alternatives such as ON1 NoNoise AI or Topaz Denoise AI. Moreover, both NoNoise AI and Denoise AI are cheaper than DxO PureRaw 3 and can denoise JPEG and Raw. Read Best Noise Reduction Software for tests and comparisons.

Alternatively, you can step up to Topaz Photo AI, which has equally effective noise reduction and adds class-leading upscaling and blur correction. However, Topaz Photo AI costs much more and is at its best when you’re attending to each image and making manual adjustments.

Compared to DxO PureRaw 2, DeepPRIME XD enabled PureRaw 3 is a little better, but not to a meaningful extent. Therefore, I do not consider updating from PureRaw 2 to PureRaw 3 high value.

Is DxO PureRaw 3 worth it?

DxO PureRaw 3 is comparably expensive and limited to processing Raw files. Yet, if you mainly work with raw files, DxO PureRaw 3’s bespoke Optical Modules deliver truly outstanding-looking image quality.

But outstanding image quality is not all that rare these days. Yet, DxO PureRaw 3 stands out thanks to its reliably effective automated workflow. In other words, you can load a hundred images into DxO PureRaw 3 and leave it to run in your absence with complete confidence in the result. And that is rare indeed.

Therefore, when it comes to image processing, DxO PureRaw 3 is a great product. But when it comes to batch processing, PureRaw is in a league of its own. Try DxO PureRaw for 30 Days – Free.

Conclusion – Is DxO PureRaw 3 worth it?

DxO PureRaw 3 is the best raw conversion application I have tested. Regarding noise reduction, DxO PureRaw 3 is extremely impressive and at least as good as the best.

What makes DxO PureRaw 3 standout

But what makes DxO PureRaw 3 my new favorite noise reduction application is two-fold. First, its automated workflow produces reliably excellent results with minimal effort on my part. Second, DxO PureRaw 3’s Optics Modules transcend its DeepPrime noise reduction, resulting in an image beyond the reach of a standalone noise reduction application.

Not Perfect

Of course, DxO PureRaw 3 is not perfect. Judged solely as a noise reduction application, PureRaw 3 is considerably more expensive than equally effective denoisers such as ON1 NoNoise AI and Topaz Denoise AI. Furthermore, unlike PureRaw 3, both alternatives denoise Raw and JPEG.

But if you don’t care about JPEG and want the fastest, laziest route towards a spectacularly enhanced and denoised image, DxO PureRaw 3 is without equal. Get DxO PureRaw 3 Now.
