How to use Layers in Luminar Neo

Luminar Neo is Skylum Software’s first photo editor to feature layers since Luminar 4. And whilst they work great, the layer-based editing in Luminar Neo isn’t for everyone.

For instance, you cannot apply adjustment, shape, or text layers in Luminar Neo. But you can layer different images together or add effects overlays such as Bokeh and Flare. So, are layers in Luminar Neo for you? Let’s take a look. Jump to Conclusion.

What are Layers in Photo Editing

Layer-based editing allows you to stack your adjustments on top of your image, rather than writing them to the image itself. For this reason, layer-based photo editing has several advantages.

First of all, since the adjustments are stacked upon the image, rather than written directly onto the image, your original photo remains preserved. Furthermore, you can adjust the opacity and blend modes of each layer. As a result, you can blend multiple adjustments to create compound effects.

Finally, many layer-based photo editors offer shape and text layers and are ideal for graphics design. However, this is not the case with Luminar Neo.

What are Layers in Luminar Neo

Layers in Luminar Neo enable you to stack additional images and effects filters on top of your original photo. And like other layer-based photo editors, you can change each layer’s blend method and opacity. By doing so, you can create unique effects no single layer could do alone.

But at this time, you cannot apply adjustments such as Tone Curves or Color Balance to layers – only directly to the image itself. In this regard, Luminar Neo is no different from other non-layer-based editors. This is not an issue by default, but if you were hoping for Photoshop-like layer manipulation, Luminar Neo is not for you.

Layers in Luminar Neo Examples

Whilst layers in Luminar Neo lack the rich functionality found elsewhere, they’re still a lot of fun. Furthermore, they are easy to use and produce nice-looking results.

Are Layers in Luminar Neo any good

Luminar Neo’s layer functionality is pretty basic. In other words, I would not recommend it as a layer-based photo editor in the traditional sense. But this is only because the term layer-based photo editor implies the sort of functionality found in Photoshop, ACDSee Ultimate, and GIMP.

ON1 Photo Raw 2022 Effects

Instead, Luminar Neo keeps things simple and as a result, layers in Luminar Neo are accessible to anyone. In many ways, they resemble the Effects Layers functionality within ON1 Photo Raw 2022 – a product that’s well worth the look if you like this kind of thing.

Skylum Software said Luminar Neo would have Layers. And it does. However, such a broad statement does set one’s expectations a little high given the other layer-based editors out there.

Whether layers in Luminar Neo are good enough depends on you. For those of you looking to cake your photos with transparent effects – Luminar Neo has you covered.

Of course, if you were expecting to do advanced layer-based editing or graphics design – Luminar Neo falls well short of alternatives such as ACDSee Ultimate, GIMP, and Photoshop.

But being simple does have advantages. First of all and unlike Photoshop, it’s really easy to use and you’ll be up and running in no time.

Therefore, layers in Luminar Neo fall well within Skylum Software’s mantra of boiling down complex editing processes for the pleasure of everyday men and women. If you’d like to know more about Luminar Neo – grab your favorite drink and stop by my Luminar Neo Review.
